Back at The Barnyard

Before there was Snooki, Kourtney and what’s her face, there was Eva Gabor who played Lisa Douglas on the popular tv show  Green Acres.  The show centered around a New York city attorney who married an Hungarian socialite who was uprooted from her glamorous city life to a less sexier abode on a farm in the middle of nowhere.  Gabor’s character on the show was subjected to farm life against her will.  Today, farms have become an ideal venue space for the willing bride who is looking to wed in a natural setting, have rustic decor and cater organic or wild game foods to her guests.

The logistics of planning a wedding on a farm are astronomical but, if thoroughly conceived, can be amazingly beautiful although not always on the pocketbook.  Among the many events my team and I are working on currently, there is one in particular that has me stretching my creative arms. However, I can’t think of a better playground on which to be stretched.

When considering the venue for any given event, the first thing that comes to mind is the guest count and, how to marry the client’s vision with the selected space.  Farm weddings are no different, however it is important to note that although you may favor one farm over another, not all are designated to hosting weddings or any given event due to insurance liability matters.  Be sure to ask the property owner whether or not obtaining your own liability insurance for your guests on their property will suffice.

Once you have jumped over the liability insurance factor, it is time to think pragmatically and creatively.  It is an added benefit to select a farm that  has a barn so as to save on tent costs or other seating arrangement alternatives. The very thought of a barn may have you going into manure stench overdrive.  I assure you that a barnyard can be dressed up to the nines and might I add, if well thought out, outshine any breathtaking hotel ballroom.  Exposed beams are a delight to quality event designer/planners.  An automatic rush of ideas should bombard you at the sight of these beams that can serve multiple purposes.  Chandeliers, rustic lanterns, florals, I mean the list is endless when it comes dressing up beams.

Most important when planning your wedding, be it on a farm, in a hotel or on a spaceship is to bring your personality into it effectively. If you are more casual people, a farm or barn experience might just be the cow’s moo for you and your guests!
