For most brides, the big white wedding and white gown have always been her big dream. In the last few years, thanks to some inventive designers and celebrities willing to think outside the box; some brides have discovered a brave new trend in experimenting with fun colors. Weddings have become a lot more personalized and unique, so it is no surprise this trend has taken off. A colorful dress can help express a bride’s personality and helps her accomplish exceptionalism.
Brides have not always traditionally worn white. Prior to 1850, most girls stepped down the aisle in their nicest dark gown and would continue to wear it again for more special occasions in years to come. The “white wedding gown” was not popularized until Queen Victoria debuted one for her wedding that year.
To reawaken this old tradition of color, Vera Wang came out with a line of black wedding dresses in Fall 2012. In Spring 2013, Vera Wang showcased her new line of red wedding gowns.
Some celebrities have taken a bold step in wearing colored gowns. They have chosen an array of different colors ranging from black to yellow, pink to peach, and purple to green. Celebrity brides who wore pink gowns include: Reese Witherspoon wed in a custom gown by Monique Lhuillier for her second wedding. Jessica Biel dawned a Giambattista Valli gown for her wedding to Justin Timberlake. Anne Hathaway processed in a Valentino gown for her private ceremony with Adam Shulman. And Gwen Stefani in a pink ombre custom Christian Dior gown made by designer John Galliano stole the show that year. Celebrity brides modeling black wedding gowns include: Avril Lavigne in a black tulle Monique Lhuillier gown for her second wedding, and Sarah Jessica Parker in a black wedding gown for her marriage to Mathew Broderick in 1997. Elizabeth Taylor had been married three times previously, making it no surprise for her to be open to different colors and styles for her dresses. She opted for a green silk gown with a sheer hood and sleeves for her marriage to husband #4 and then a yellow chiffon dress when marrying husband #5. Amber Tamblyn was another celebrity who wore a yellow during her wedding to David Cross. Celebrities who boldly chose purple wedding dresses include: Julianne Moore who wore a lilac Prada dress for her private ceremony, Dita Von Teese in a gown by Vivienne Westwood, and Sophia Coppola in a lilac Alaia chiffon dress for her wedding to Thomas Mars. Singer Kelis wore a green ball gown for their nuptials in 2005. Channing Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan, wore an ivory Reem Acra gown with peach feathers on the skirt for their wedding.
