Even if you have declared your face to be a make up free zone, your wedding day should be the exception to the rule. Makeup was designed to enhance ones already perfect features therefore, make full use of it on your wedding day. On this day, one would think the paparazzi is out in full force as every guest generally tends to bring a camera or two to capture all of the special moments. With that said, it’s advisable for all parties involved in your wedding to be camera ready. Begin by researching the professional wedding and makeup artists in your area. Royal treatment on this day is not anything peculiar, in fact, this is the one day when your hair and makeup artist will come to you and save you from traveling across town to get glammed up.
Once you have identified a good prospect, schedule a dry run so that you and your stylist can test different looks. Consider using this person to do hair and makeup for the pre-wedding portrait or the engagement photo shoot. This is to safeguard yourself as well as a great way to verify if you can truly trust this stylist with your hair and makeup on your big day. What I consider to be below the belt is, asking one stylist to do both hair and makeup, then, take a picture to take to another stylist to duplicate. This is a sure way of setting yourself up for disappointment. Honesty and good ethics don’t fade to the background just because it is your big day!

I have prepared a list of questions that you should ask your prospective hair stylist and makeup artist:
- Do you do makeup or hair on-site or do I have to come to you? A job well done and convenience are your target goal.
- Are there travel charges if you come to me? It is imperative you ask this question and make sure you are comfortable with these charges.
- How many faces or heads of hair can you do for a wedding? Working with an overworked or stressed stylist is not what you are striving for.
- Do you have assistants to bring with you? Assistants make the job flow comfortably.
- Do you offer complimentary preview? Most professionals do.
- How do I keep my hair and makeup looking fresh throughout the entire day? They are professionals and should be able to offer you several tips.
- What products do you use? Drug store products are a definite no. Make sure they are using professional products.
- Are you licensed by the state? Never, ever use anyone who is not licensed or has an expired license.
- Do you sell your products? You may want to purchase a product you fell in love with for your personal collection.
Other vitally important questions to ask are:
- What is your payment/cancellation policy?
- Do you accept credit cards?
- Do you use airbrush makeup techniques?
- Do you have a backup in case of emergency or illness?
- What are your fees?
Let these questions guide you to select the perfect candidate, that will beautify you on what will prove to be one of the most important days of your life, if not the most important.
